How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
