FAQ

Which is easier: contracting or being a handyman?

Handyman work requires less resources than contracting because you only need your own tools. It is important that you are able to manage your workload and work schedule. Contractors often rely heavily on subcontractors.

Do you have the skills to fix my leaking faucets?

Although a handyman may be able to handle minor repairs, he will not have the necessary training to tackle major projects such as wiring a house or installing custom cabinets. For minor home improvement tasks, however, there are no limits to what a handyman can accomplish.

Is there anything I should look out for before hiring a handyman?

Hire someone with experience in the type of project you are looking for. You should also check references and ask past customers. It may be a good idea to add some money to cover any unexpected costs. Also, you'll want to make sure he's insured and licensed.

Where did handymen originate?

There are thousands upon thousands of handymen all over the U.S. but nearly none started as contractors. Many started out as tradesmen, learning the skills through apprenticeships. As a result, they often possess great skill sets and a wealth of knowledge, which makes them very valuable assets to any company.

How To

How to Install a Receptacle Box

When installing any type of electrical outlet, you should always follow the guidelines your local building inspector set forth. This includes making sure that the wiring is correctly installed and that there aren't any fire hazards or water damage.

Four wires are coming from the circuit breaker panel. Most boxes come prewired for installation. The two black wires run through a box to the first screws on one side. While the red and the white wires run to the second screws on the opposite side. When connecting wires, it is important that you don't use wire nuts or wrap around screws. You will have difficulty getting the wires to stay put after they are tightened. They should be loose enough for them to move but not too tight that they pull out of their holes.

A second piece of hardware might be required if you wish to add a receptacle or container to an existing box. You'll need to take off the top of your existing metal box, and then add a cover plate. Once the hole is made for the new receptacle and the cover plate is attached, you would need to connect all of the wires to the new receptacle.

You may not need a licensed electrician to replace the existing light switches in your home. First, remove the switch from its mount. Then, disconnect all wires connecting to the switch. These wires are the ones that supply power to the switch as well as the ones that supply electricity for the lights in the area where it is located. Once you have disconnected all of it, you can begin the replacement process.

Once you have removed the old switch, measure the distance between wall studs and mark it with a permanent marker. Once this is done, you will need to determine if your new switch should be mounted higher than or lower than the floor. Depending on the height at which the switch will be mounted, you will either need to drill a hole for the mounting bracket or attach the switch directly to the wall using drywall anchors.

After you have taken measurements and marked the locations, you can begin the project. You will need to remove the drywall from the area where the switch will go. For cable safety, make sure you leave 8 inches between each of the studs. Next, mount the new switch using appropriate mounting brackets. Next, attach the cables and secure the switch onto the mounting brackets. Once you have installed the switch, turn the power back ON and test it to make sure it functions properly.
