How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
