How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
