How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
