How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
