How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
