How To

How to replace a broken window

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
