How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
