How To

How do you replace a broken window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Next step: Clean the glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
